your realtime captioner is linda macdonald. breaking news in mexico... a powerful earthquake shakes good afternoon, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. michelle is off on this good friday. and we begin with some breaking news in mexico. a powerful earthquake shaking buildings, power lines and sending people running into the streets. this morning's quake had a magnitude of 7.2, centered 170 miles southwest of mexico city. the ground shook in the capital for at least 30 seconds.

so far there are only reports of minor damage like broken windows. but as with previous earthquakes in mexico, it can take a little time to learn of the extent of damage in remote areas close to that epicenter. coincidentally happening today, the anniversary of the 1906 quake and the ceremonies remembering its victims. [ sirens ] >> sirens wailed at 5:12 a.m. this morning. that's the moment when the city shook violently 108 years ago. people gathered again at lotta's fountain at market and kearney which was the meeting place during the chaos. later people sprayed gold spray- paint on a fire hydrant among the few that worked during the disaster. >> we need to remember this. we need to be prepared. and this is all about remembering our great history and singing our beautiful songs and just keeping it alive. >> that quake and fire destroyed 80% of the city. an estimated 3,000 people were killed, although it was not possible at the time to get an

exact count. it all added up to one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the united states. some developing news out of richmond right now. an attempted burglary ends with deadly gunfire. an intruder now dead, it happened near 13th and coalinga in richmond. anne makovec with the gun battle and why neighbors fear retaliation. >> reporter: this is the scene of a gun battle overnight. a 71-year-old man who owns this building ended up being shot several times. another man ended up dead. police say it all started when four men tried to break in around 1 a.m. > we believe they intended to commit a burglary. the homeowner, the victim, defended himself. gunfire was exchanged between both parties injuring the homeowner and killing one of the suspects. >> reporter: the general manager of a plumbing business that just bought this building from the 71-year-old owner, though he says his business has nothing to do with what happened last night, he is now

afraid of retaliation. >> these people have family and friends and they see events in there. we are doing the transition to move in. so they may think that burglar that shot him was affiliated with our company. >> reporter: police say plumbing businesses are becoming common bay area targets because they contain precious metals. but as the blood stains are cleaned off the sidewalk, police say it appears to be the suspected burglar who paid the ultimate price. in addition to the suspect who was killed, police have the three other suspects in custody. even if they didn't pull the trigger on their friend, they may still be charged with murder because they were a party to the original crime of burglary. in richmond, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> the suspected burglar who was killed is 28-year-old pierre andre reddick. he is from richmond. happening now, law enforcement in stockton literally trying to bulldoze their way to a murder suspect there. the san joaquin county sheriff's deputies have been at a standoff since midnight

outside a home. the man inside is wanted for murder but no other details have been release so far. patience wearing thin in the neighborhood. in the past few hours, s.w.a.t. teams and armored vehicles have attempted to knock down the walls set off flash grenades and offered a phone for communication. but still, no arrest. concord police investigating a first homicide of the year. 18-year-old victor manuel gutierrez was shot to death last night in the 1600 block of adelaide street. one neighbor said he heard it happened right outside his home. >> i'm just laying in bed. i heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. probably about six, seven shots. uhm, got on the floor. got up, ran over to the phone. >> when the police finally arrived, they found the teen lying in the road. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police are still searching for suspects there. petaluma family can thank a quick think good samaritan for saving their lives. their home on lakeville highway

near cannon lane caught fire around 2 a.m. start energy garage. the entire structure lit up quickly. matthew connolly just happened to be driving by at the time. he woke up three people inside and got them out safely. i just ran towards the house. i knocked on the windows and doors and luckily, people came out, heard me. >> nobody was hurt. the garage, two cars completely destroyed. and there was some damage to the main house, as well. new at noon, you may have noticed some extra police presence in various bart stations throughout the morning. it's all part of a security training exercise with tsa and several other law enforcement agencies. uniformed officers and police k- 9 units were at the bart station at sfo as well as embarcadero, west oakland and the coliseum bart stops. the training is to prepare for future emergencies. sounds of frantic callers are now out from last week's deadly bus crash on interstate 5. cbs reporter bigad shaban with the calls and how investigators are

reconstructing the key moments before impact. >> a bus just exploded. >> reporter: newly released 911 calls reveal the terror that followed last week's fiery crash when a fedex truck slammed head on into a bus full of high school students in orland, california. >> i was in a travel bus and we crashed into a fedex truck. >> are you still on the bus? >> we got off the bus. the bus is on fire. >> reporter: the two vehicles exploded into flames killing both drivers as well as five students and three adult chaperones who were on their way to a college tour. california highway patrol officers are now testing vehicles similar to those involved in the crash. cameras were installed inside to see both drivers' point of view leading up to the collision. investigators are reconstructing the accident using a process known as skid testing. >> which is basically the sticking power of the vehicles on the asphalt so that we can hopefully identify -- get as closely as we can the preimpact speeds of both of these

vehicles. >> reporter: vigils have been held across california including for art arzola an admissions counselor at humboldt university. david arzola is his younger brother. >> i love you, with all my heart. >> reporter: while the california highway patrol is examining the cause of the crash, the national transportation safety board is conducting its own investigation to determine whether new safety regulations are needed to keep passengers safe. bigad shaban, cbs news, los angeles. and another bus accident has left a colorado driver with life-threatening injuries. the car ended up wedged under the rear of the school bus. this is near fort collins. three children and the bus driver were also injured. some bay area news now. investigators looking into a second hiker death on mount tam say it's likely coincidence. 50-year-old marie chris stain sanner of mill valley was found yesterday. authorities say she was found at the bottom of a ravine.

a menlo park woman was found dead in the same area. no sign of foul play. pressure is on san jose city council to take a closer look at the city police department. judge ladoris cordell hand- delivered copies of an audit to the pd yesterday. it highlights two cases where officers lied to cover up sexual misconduct while on duty. those officers were punished but cordell recommends the department fire officers who do lie. a san jose state university panel has released its final recommendations on how to improve racial issues on campus. the task force was created after allegations that a black student was bullied and racially targeted by his white roommates last year. that criminal case still ongoing. the panel will recommend the creation of a new diversity office and a diversity course for its new students. coming up on this friday, new developments in the south korean ferry disaster. the people that the authorities want to talk to and how another person died but not on the

the company says it began lt arts and crafts chain michaels is the latest retailer to report a possible security breach. the company says it began last year. michaels says about 2.6 million cards may have been affected about 7% of all debit and credit cards used at that company's stores. about 400,000 cards were potentially affected at aaron brothers a michaels subsidiary. they say the breach is contained. in nepal, the number of people killed in an avalanche has now reached at least a dozen. the victims are all sherpa guides who had set out early

this morning to fix ropes for some of the other climbers there. rescue workers are searching for three other guides who are still unaccounted for. officials there call this the worst disaster to hit climbers on the world's highest mountain. today workers off the coast of south korea are trying to hoist a sunken ferry back to the surface. the official death toll remains at 28 but some 270 others still unaccounted for. alfonso van marsh on another tragedy that is now linked to that disaster at sea. >> reporter: buoys mark the location of the now completely sunken ferry 12 miles off the coast of south korea. huge cranes are at the scene. workers are trying to lift the 480-foot ship back to the surface. divers are pumping air into the ferry hoping some of the hundreds who are missing might still be alive. south korean prosecutors have asked for an arrest warrant for the captain and two crew members. investigators say the captain was not at the helm when the ship took a sharp turn, tipped

on its side and started sinking. they also say it's possible that quicker evacuation orders from the captain could have saved lives. survivors say he was one of the first to abandon ship but south korean maritime experts say unlike in the west, captains are not expected to go down with the ship. most who are missing are high school students. a vice principal from their school who was rescued at sea apparently took his own life. his body was found hanging from a tree after he apologized to the students' families. [ screaming ] >> reporter: at an emergency shelter for families of the missing, the waiting is agony. the people here know time is running out along with hope. alfonso van marsh, cbs 2 news. >> grief counselors have been brought into the school where hundreds of missing students attended. officials say they hope to prevent more survivors from taking their lives. a lunar mission has ended in a crash-landing. the robotic moon explorer was launched seven months ago.

it was short for lunar atmosphere and dust environmental explorer. nasa says it crashed on the back side of the moon. scientists say it likely hit the side of a mountain during a high-speed low altitude orbit. it was only supposed to last 100 days. it went 7 months even though it wasn't designed for the conditions. nasa says it did survive the extreme cold and the darkness of tuesday's lunar eclipse. so i guess you could say ladee did the job. >> sure did. >> how are you? >> doing all right. how are you? >> i'm fine. we have a nice little holiday weekend coming up. >> we do. it is going -- we're going to have a fried egg easter sunday. in the low 80s by sunday. today is nice. we have mostly sunny skies. numbers are going to skyrocket into the -- well, mid-70s today. you can see that it starts with the headline, easter sunday looks nice, low 80s inland, mid- 60s along the shoreline. in between, probably mid-70s around the bay. looking pretty good for easter

sunday. right now around concord, 72 degrees. oakland 63. san francisco 60. 68 at santa rosa. you can see the low cloudiness coming in off the golden gate and through the bridge at this hour. so that sea breeze is going to kick in. just to recap, that 7.2 earthquake even though it was about 160 miles from mexico city, mexico city sits in the middle of an old lakebed and so whenever there's a distant earthquake like this, it shakes like a huge city on a bowl of jell-o. they can really get strong shaking in mexico city. so we are going to see if there's more reports of damages coming out of the city in the hours to come today. for us, we'll look at upper 70s inland and the bay will be around the mid-70s. at the coastline just 60s. nice night for a baseball game. a's playing the houston astros. game time temperature 62 degrees with fair skies. here's what's happening. we have high pressure that's parked offshore. but it's this low that's up in the pacific northwest that is going to deepen by tuesday and really cool temperatures. so we have high pressure first and warm temperatures and then much cooler weather by tuesday. the numbers are just going to

collapse with readings only in the low 60s on that day. but in the meantime we have sunshine, so we're going to enjoy it while we can. small craft advisories offshore a little patchy fog and numbers reaching only the upper 50s outside the gate and wind waves up to 5 feet of. today 67-degrees at hayward. 74 morgan hill. 61 pacifica. east bay looking nice, too. livermore in the mid-70s and 74 degrees at antioch. 76 at travis air force base out in fairfield. up in the north bay, we are going to see mill valley at 73 degrees. bodega bay chilly 70 degrees. ukiah 77 degrees. clearlake 75. extended forecast we'll be going with "stratus quo," the usual low clouds in the morning and afternoon, just confined to the coastline and temperatures warming up into the low 80s for easter sunday. and then a chance of rain in the bay area on tuesday. >> had to throw that in? >> spring storm. then we'll turn it around again. >> we know you're here and

a particularly relaxing one needed. time for lunch. it's the escapeful many outstanding salads. our fresh grocer tony tantillo on how to pick the perfect romaine. >> reporter: well, today's tip of the day is going to be is with romaine. i know it's springtime. there's all beautiful spring vegetables out there. romaine is year round. but with caesar salad you have to have romaine. now that barbecue season is right around the corner, have you ever had a barbecued caesar salad? put the romaine on the grill with olive oil, salt and pepper for 10 seconds. that's it. right when it wilts, you take it out, cool it down, then you make your caesar salad. when you buy romaine, nice and green all the way around, very, very important. where it's white and cut should be clear free from browning whatsoever. when you bring them home, crisp it. put some water on it, wrap a paper towel around it and put it in the refrigerator. it sounds like extra work but let me tell you something, romaine will stay nice and
